How to start a cigar or pipe club
Most clubs begin with a handful of friends and a standing date. Here is how the clubs that last tend to do it, whether you smoke cigars, pipes, or both.
Find your first five
Ask your tobacconist to put up a notice, tell the regulars in the lounge, and invite friends who smoke. Five people who show up every month is a club.
Choose cigars, pipes, or both
A single focus makes for deeper conversation; a mixed club draws more members. Many clubs welcome both and simply let each table find its own talk.
Find a place where you may smoke
Smoking laws differ from state to state and town to town, and many indoor places are off limits. Common homes for a club are a tobacconist’s lounge, a cigar bar, a member’s porch or barn, or a patio that allows it. Check the local rules and the venue’s own before you book.
Set a rhythm
Pick a fixed night, such as the second Thursday, so no one has to ask when. Regular beats frequent.
Give each meeting a reason
A blend or cigar of the month, a pass-around tin, a swap table, a pairing with whisky, port or coffee, a talk from a blender, pipe maker or roller, or a visit to a farm or factory in Tobacco Agri-tourism.
Keep the house rules short
Members and guests 21 and older, respect for the venue and for people nearby who do not smoke, and a ride home for anyone who has had a drink.
Keep money simple
Modest dues or a per-meeting kitty to cover room, food and the occasional shared box or tin. Name a treasurer early and keep a simple record.
Grow it
List your club here, post every party and cigar or pipe night, partner with your local shop, and plan one big night a year: an anniversary dinner, a holiday party, or a regional pipe or cigar show.
Make it official when you need to
Once a club handles real money or hosts public events, many adopt simple bylaws, open a club bank account and look at event insurance. Ask an accountant or attorney about your state’s rules.
